San Francisco Chronicle: Oakland ADU housing fair draws large crowds seeking opportunity in in-law units

by Ricardo Cano, SF Chronicle

More than 150 homeowners looking to build accessory dwelling units on their properties gathered with builders and lenders in downtown Oakland Saturday, reflecting an apparently growing interest in ADUs, which proponents say could boost the Bay Area’s housing stock.

Some who attended the fair — organized by the Casita Coalition nonprofit organization — were interested in building ADUs for their children or elderly parents. Others viewed them as a potential home to settle in their eventual retirements, while adding a secondary income by renting them out in the interim.

Also known as in-law units or granny flats, ADUs are small dwellings with their own utilities and appliances built on the same lot of an existing house.
