About us

Casita Coalition is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in California with a national reach, leading a broad multi-sector coalition to advance middle housing solutions. We bring together leaders from the public and private sector to create more neighborhood homes including “missing middle” homes such as ADUs, ‘plexes, and townhomes. Our founders co-wrote the 2017 law that legalized ADUs (Accessory Dwelling Units) statewide and unlocked the California ADU revolution, now considered the national model. We have since driven key legislation and regulatory reforms, removed implementation barriers and raised awareness of middle housing benefits, empowering homeowners, practitioners and policymakers in California and beyond.

Leveraging policy victories to build the middle housing landscape and address the housing crisis

Since our journey began in 2017, our work ignited transformative change:

  • More than 113,000 ADUs have been permitted in California alone

  • Seven U.S. states have enacted strong ADU/middle housing laws, with more in progress

  • Zoning reform, ADUs, and middle housing are now central to the national housing conversation

Our Mission

Casita Coalition fosters resilient communities by championing diverse housing solutions that empower neighborhoods to thrive.

Through our core strategies of narrative change, capacity-building, systems change, and policy reform, we catalyze innovative housing solutions.

By building the middle, we can accomplish great things.

Middle housing types - such as ADUs, duplexes, granny flats and cottage clusters - can help meet our changing needs while addressing the broader housing challenges in California.

Our Vision

We envision neighborhoods with enough homes and home types that allow for renters to achieve stability, prospective homeowners to be able to start their wealth building journey and for existing homeowners to be able to sustain homeownership. Over the next decade we aim to achieve our vision by removing barriers and growing an equitable middle housing ecosystem that restores economic vitality and mobility to our families and communities.

Co-creating Resilient Communities:

Providing housing choice and opportunity for people of all ages and stages of life.

Our Values

  • Expanding the range of middle housing forms in neighborhoods currently limited to single-family homes will improve rental and homeownership opportunities for diverse families.

  • Engaging our coalition of housing advocates/policymakers, practitioners and beyond enables us to more effectively co-create solutions.

  • Adopting newer, cost-effective, and flexible housing solutions allows us to scale production of homes for people of all incomes,

  • Educating and mobilizing the wider ecosystem of housing finance, real estate, and development barriers that limit equitable access to homes will grow a diverse and  robust housing delivery ecosystem.
