AB 1033, authored by Asm. Phil Ting, supported by the Casita Coalition, was signed into law last year. Under Mayor Mahan’s leadership, San Jose has become the city to first to opt into 1033, making it possible for homeowners such as the local featured in the story to sell their ADU to family members who have been priced out of Silicon Valley. Casita Board Chair, Rafael Perez, shared that this significant shift will create more homeownership opportunities for families in San Jose, particularly at the price points that are lower than traditional single-family homes.
